Abstract

     Since the invention of activated carbon block, it has gradually become one of the mainstream choices for purifying drinking water. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) combined with a binder to form a carbon block performs better than granular activated carbon (GAC) and can reduce the widest range of contaminants of health concern

 

What is CTO activated carbon block?

     Activated carbon can be divided into granular activated carbon (GAC) with larger particle sizes and powdered activated carbon (PAC) with smaller particle sizes according to size. With drinking water filter system, granular activated carbon is filled in the filter bottle as a filter material. A good filtering effect can be obtained when the water source passes through the filter element.

     Theoretically, smaller particle sizes can obtain a better filtering effect. But if the particle size is too small, the stack will be tighter, so the resistance to water flow will be increased during filtration, resulting in a larger pressure difference to obtain a poor flow rate.

     In order to obtain a better drinking water filtration experience, the technology of compressing granular carbon into a carbon block using a binder has also been developed. Carbon block is also called CTO carbon block, where C is chlorine, T is taste, and O is odor, so it also means that CTO carbon block has excellent performance in removing chlorine, improving taste and eliminating odor.

 

Carbon block vs. GAC

     Compared with granular activated carbon, CTO activated carbon block have many advantages. 1. The use of powder-activated carbon to make carbon block is more economical, and its adsorption effect per unit weight is also better than that of GAC. 2. The PAC is connected and fixed by a binder, which also reduces the possibility of channeling. 3. Because PAC is immobilized, the pores of the carbon blocks can be controlled to increase the ability of mechanical filtration to remove particulate solid pollutants such as cysts, asbestos, and granular lead. 4. Granular carbon needs a sufficient bed height to ensure that the contact time can be met to achieve the filtering effect. By contrast, the carbon block is more efficient in treating water 5. Carbon blocks can also be added with some additional materials to form carbon blocks to enhance the ability of water to filter and treat pollutants, such as adding heavy metal adsorbents to prevent and control heavy metals or adding silver ions (Ag+) or antibacterial materials to inhibit the growth of bacteria. The formulation can be adjusted depending on the target contaminants that are desired to be removed.

 

Summary

     As the development of carbon block technology is becoming more and more mature, it has considerable advantages over granular carbon, and the filtering of water is more efficient, so in the field of drinking water filtration, activated carbon blocks have gradually become the main option in the market one.
