Microplastic Filtration: What Makes the Difference

Not all water filters are designed to reduce microplastics.
The effectiveness of a filter depends less on the product label and more on the filtration technology inside it.
Here are 3 common approaches:
💦 Activated carbon filtration
Primarily designed to reduce chlorine, taste, odor, and selected organic contaminants. Its ability to reduce microplastics depends on the carbon structure, particle size, and overall filter design.
💦 Microfiltration or membrane filtration
Uses a defined pore size to physically retain suspended particles. Membranes such as hollow fiber can provide more consistent particle reduction when the microplastics are larger than the membrane’s rated pore size.
💦 Reverse osmosis
Provides a high level of microplastic reduction while also removing dissolved salts and many other contaminants. However, RO systems are generally more complex and may produce reject water.
There is no single filtration technology that is best for every application.
The right solution depends on the target contaminants, particle size, required flow rate, water efficiency, and system design.
